The BEST Homemade Shaving Cream (for Guys & Gals)

The Best Homemade Shaving Cream

Summer is here, which means shaving-and-grooming-body-hair-season is here too! I figured that I should hurry up and post this recipe for the BEST Homemade Shaving Cream before summer is over and we slip back in to our furry, not-so-groomed selves. Of course, it's my personal opinion that this is the BEST Homemade Shaving Cream, so if you happen to disagree....well, let's be honest, you've probably messed it up somehow.

A couple of months ago, I had a reader ask me if I had a recipe for shaving cream that both her and her husband could use. I said no, because, at the time, I was just using a plain ol' bar of soap, and my husband, to this day, shaves his face under a hot stream of water in the shower, sans mirror and soap of any kind! It's actually quite impressive (and scary) to watch.

Nonetheless, I began testing homemade shaving cream recipes. I tried out a recipe that called for coconut oil and shea butter--it was like body-butter and shaving-cream in one, which sounded like a great concept, but I was disappointed because my razor kept getting clogged! I also tried shaving with straight honey, like I'd seen on Thank Your Body, but I found it hard to apply and store in the shower, although it didn't clog the razor and left my legs smooth--worth a try, but wasn't for me.

Little did I know that the Best Homemade Shaving Cream was right under my nose (literally.) My new shaving cream has been in disguise as my Homemade Facial Cleanser this whole time!

Why I Love to Use my Facial Cleanser as Shaving Cream

  • It lathers
  • Doesn't clog up my razor
  • Goes on smooth
  • Leaves my legs moisturized (unlike my old bar-of-soap method which left them looking like aligator skin)
  • It's relatively in-expensive and and easy to make
  • It's easy to store in a pump bottle in the shower
  • Fragrance-Free
  • Eco-friendly!
  • Convinced?

Although my husband refuses to change his method (which doesn't bother me because water and a razor is as non-toxic and eco-friendly as it gets), he has tried shaving with the Best Homemade Shaving Cream, and Man-Approves it!

 About the Ingredients

The ingredients for this Shaving Cream recipe are the same as the Homemade Facial Cleanser (honey, oil and castile soapIngredients), although I've slightly changed the ratios to create more of a lather, reminiscent of shaving cream.

You don't have to use raw honey for your shaving cream, as it's more expensive than generic store-bought honey, however, men may want to use the good-stuff on their face--especially those with acne-prone skin. For the oil component, olive, avocado, grape seed or almond oil will all work nicely, but not coconut oil because it will clog up you razor.

Lastly, I use Dr. Bronner's, lavender scented, liquid castile soap, although guys may be happier with the citrus, tea-tree or peppermint scents.

Make sure to check out my Homemade Facial Cleanser post to find out why I LOVE to use honey, carrier oils, and castile soap in my homemade, health and beauty recipes!

Happy Shaving!
