Is Your Skin Purging or Breaking Out? Here's How to Tell the Difference.

“Skin purging” sounds like a terrifying term, but it’s a lot more common than you realize and may answer some questions you might have had since switching to an all-natural skincare line.

So if you’ve recently ditched your conventional products for an all-natural line like ours, full of natural nutrients and beneficial ingredients, but notice some weird things happening to your skin, keep on reading!

What is skin purging?

Skin purging is effectively a “skin detox.”

When you cut processed foods out of your diet, your body undergoes various physical sensations and manifestations, as toxins from the specific food you were eating make their way out of your system. This may go on for a few days to a few weeks, during which you may experience symptoms including fatigue, anxiety, headaches and breakouts.

Skin detox is much the same when switching out chemically processed products for natural products.

This is what happens to our skin when we switch to safe, beneficial skincare products, too - your skin is going to go through a few changes as it adjusts to the new products.

For example, clogged pores, due to a buildup of dead skin from a microcomedone under the skin's surface, will typically take weeks to develop into a pimple, whitehead, blackhead, or cyst. However, if you just started with a new product containing active ingredients that increase cell turnover, it may cause these microcomedones to surface or ‘mature’ faster! ⠀⠀

This is not a bad thing.

In fact, wouldn’t you agree that it shows just how bad your old products were and that your new products are working as they should?

Understanding the “band-aid” effect with conventional skincare

Conventional products offer a “band-aid” effect, simply covering up any skincare issues without getting deep into your pores to treat the root of the problem.

When you start using skincare rich in antioxidants, these nutrients will sink deep down into your pores, filling out dirt and debris that may have been lurking beneath the surface.

The result is not always pleasant and may include anything from a mild breakout or rash to more severe, big, pus-filled pimples.

Stick with it, though, because once these toxins are out of your skin and clear up, your skin will look healthier, more transparent and more radiant than ever before!

How to know if it’s a skin purge or a regular breakout

This is actually a great question!

It’s normal to freak out at first and blame your products, but now that you know why you are breaking out, give your skin sometime. If your pimples have gotten worse or seemingly popped out of nowhere since starting new products, it’s very likely a result of skin purging.

Actual breakouts occur regularly and are often due to various factors, including hormones, poor diet and other lifestyle factors.

Breakouts from skin purging also usually appear on oilier areas that clog up quickly, such as the nose.

Your new “clean” all-natural products are just cleaning out dirt and bacteria and paving the way for healthier, more transparent, happier skin!

How long will skin purging last?

Depending on your age and skin type, it can take 4-6 weeks (on the longer end of the scale if you're older) for your skin to "purge" and adapt to your new Cleanser.

Of course, everyone's skin is different, but if you experience a sudden break out after switching to our Cleanser, I encourage you not to give up - this probably means that your new skincare product is working on getting the gunk out from your skin!

Ideal Ingredients for Clear Skin

Ingredients that can increase cell turnover include glycolic acid (AHA), salicylic acid (BHA), Vitamin C, Retinoids and certain plant extracts, and therefore cause whiteheads and blackheads to come to the surface sooner.
