Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution for Carpet Cleaners

Carpet Cleaning SolutionI'll admit, I'm slightly OCD when it comes to clean floors. I'm constantly sweeping, vacuuming, wiping or mopping them. Having a toddler and two little dogs doesn't exactly help the matter.Carpets are in a cleaning category of their own-- they're basically, in my mind,  dirt and grime magnets and need constant sanitization. This is why we decided to invest in a quality, carpet cleaner! We bought this one and have been super happy with it!The only problem: the cleaning solution that the carpet cleaner came with, and recommended using (of course, made by the makers of the carpet cleaner), consisted of toxic ingredients and had a VERY strong, artificial fragrance -- things a always steer clear of in my cleaning products. (Read more about the toxicity of household cleaners here.)For a fraction of the price, and using ingredients that I already had on hand, I was able to make an AMAZING homemade, carpet cleaning solution for my carpet cleaner! Fragrance-free, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and all those other great hyphenated words. It works just as well as commercial cleaners, without the headache-inducing fragrance.

What You Will Need

  • Carpet Cleaning Ingredients4 litre jug (like an old milk jug)
  • 3.75 litres of Hot water (unless you're carpet cleaner heats the water, like mine does, then just use room temp. water.)
  • 1/4 cup Hydrogen Peroxide, 3%
  • 2 Tbsp White Vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Dish Soap (Resist the urge to add more! This is all you need.) - I like this one

First fill the jug with hot (or room temp) water, leaving a few inches of room, then add the remaining ingredientsPut the lid on the jug and gently shift it around to mix the contents. Don't shake it as you don't want it to be bubbly.Pour the solution into your carpet cleaner, and ... well, clean your carpets!
