As you probably know, I’m passionate about health and the environment, but what exactly makes me a “Modern Hippie”?
Makeup is the perfect example.
Unlike plain ol’ stereotypical hippies, who don’t wear makeup (or deodorant or shoes…), I DO wear makeup. Not all the time, but definitely when I’m hitting the town with the ladies, feeling (and looking) a little tired, or when my confidence just needs a bit of a boost. And not just any makeup will do, either – I’m pretty picky about quality.
The “Hippie” in “Modern Hippie” represents the fact that, even when it comes to makeup, I’m still very conscious about what I’m putting on my skin, and that the products that I’m using are made with the environment in mind.
So to sum things up for you if you…
Hippies don’t wear makeup.
Modern Hippies wear safe and environmentally conscious makeup.
Make sense? What category do you fall under?? If you’re in my modern-hippie-boat, then AWESOME, because I have some pretty sweet news for you.
But first, there are a few numbers that I want to share with you to help put things into perspective…
*Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health published a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores.
Are you as shocked as I was by these numbers?! It was very surprising to me.
I have one more number for you…
It is this number alone that has sparked my interested in Beautycounter, and I am proud to say that I now work with this company to promote their line of safe cosmetics.
“But, Carly, don’t you make all of your own skin care products?”
YES, I’m still a huge advocate in making you own products, for health and environmental reasons, and I will continue to share DIY recipes and sell my Modern Hippie skin care products, BUT, I have failed you in one category…. Makeup.
I’ve tried for years and have yet to re-create my favourite, must-have pieces (mascara, foundation, liner and eye shadow), that even come close to the standard that I look for in makeup. I’ve ended up with goopy mascara that leaves me looking like Alice Cooper by the end of the day, and foundation that lacks coverage. In other words, makeup is a DIY disaster.
With Beautycounter, I get the best of both worlds: I know that my makeup is safe and packaged using their high environmental standards, and the products are wonderful!
Welcome to Beautycounter
Like I mentioned before, Beautycounter has banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard— all while ensuring our products perform, and that they’re as indulgent as any lengthening mascara, lipstick or foundation on the market. I didn’t only fall in love with Beautycounter because their products are safe and high performing, but I wanted to work with a company that is working towards real change.
Beautycounter is dedicated to making changes on the legislative level and creating a safe skin care movement. They are taking action in Washington and working to reform the current laws, in hopes that other skin care companies will follow their strict safety guidelines. They also work very closely to support 3 non-profit organizations that are doing great work to reduce our amount of chemical exposure.
Watch this short video to learn why I am so proud to be a part of this company – We All Deserve Better.
Now Let’s Talk About Some Actual Products!
Beautycounter is dedicated to product performance, as much as product safety. After trying countless non-toxic cosmetic brands (you don’t even want to know how much money I’ve spent on this!), I can tell you that this combination of non-toxic ingredients and products that work is extremely rare.
Some natural cosmetic brands use only 100% organic ingredients. This is as pure as makeup can get, but often, the performance is lacking. While Beautycounter uses both synthetic and organic ingredients, they never compromise on the safety of the ingredients. Beautycounter has developed a groundbreaking and rigorous ingredient screening process, looking for data on skin irritation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, cumulative exposure (are we exposed to this chemical from other sources) and more.
I’m fairly new to Beautycounter makeup, as it’s only been available in Canada since May, but honestly, I haven’t come across a product I haven’t liked. It comparable to the high-quality (high-chemical) makeup that I’ve been using for the past decade, and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy and looking like I’ve been partying hard for 3 days straight like homemade makeup does.
