Peering Out at 2016 – My Goals and Intentions for the Year to Come

Although it’s just another day on a man-made calender, and technically, any day of the year is just as good as today to set goals and intentions and break bad habits, January 1st really does spark the desire to self-reflect.

Today, the first day of 2016, I’m particularly excited about. I hate to say it, but my enthusiasm to start a new year is partly due to the fact that 2015 is now behind us! It’s hard to call 2015 a “bad” year because so much good has come out of it, but it definitely came with it’s challenges…and that’s a very nice way of putting it. As I peer out at 2016, I can see so much potential and feel nothing excitement for life. I am happy.

I started today off by “un-plugging” from the world, and heading down to my favourite beach (and favourite spot on the planet) with my family. Being in such a peaceful environment gave me a good chance to think about my intentions and goals for the year to come. I was able to narrow it down to my “top three,” which I tried to keep healthy, attainable and non-materialistic. Here are they are 🙂

1) The first one kicks off in a few weeks: have a baby and take care of myself. It’s not really a “goal,” per-se, but taking care of MYSELF after the birth and allowing time for rest will be a constant challenge for me. With my daughter, I was in a mad rush to get back to “normal,” and my mental, physical and emotional health suffered as a result. I’m determined to do things differently this time around – rest, bond with baby, and rest some more.

2) Continue to educate myself on self-sustainability, specifically, growing and preserving food. Since this time last year, we’ve built a house on a 1/3 of an acre. Our back yard is currently a blank canvass and I can’t wait to turn it in to a back yard grocery store, complete with chickens! But first, I need to continue to read and learn about making the most of our space in order to become more self-sufficient and rely less on buying food.

3) Manage work/play/rest better. I have days when I feel totally over-whelmed and frazzled and end up running around in circles, accomplishing nothing except stressing myself out. My goal for this year is to establish healthy routines and daily/weekly/monthly schedules to keep me organized and prevent stress, and allot specific time for work, family, and ME.
