Snow day today! It doesn’t happen too often here on the Sunshine Coast (which is not as sunny as it’s name suggests) so when it does, it’s something to be enjoyed. Today’s weather sparks a desire to curl up with a book (or laptop in my case) and sip on a warm beverage. This has inspired me to share my Metabolism Boosting Mocha recipe! I’ll explain why I’ve decided to call this mocha a “metabolism-booster” by describing the ingredients…
Coffee, an obvious stimulant, boosts our metabolism, which in turn, can lead to weight loss (1). This article, put out by Authority Nutrition, explains the effect that caffeine has on our metabolism. According to this article, “caffeine stimulates the nervous system, which sends direct signals to the fat cells to tell them to break down fat (1).” Caffeine also increases the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline), which signals fat tissue to break down fats and release them into the blood. The effect that caffeine has on metabolism is noticed most in moderate coffee drinkers because long-term coffee drinkers build up a tolerance.
Coconut Oil, unlike most oil, contains medium-chain fatty acids, instead of long-chain fatty acids (2). Medium chain fatty acids are metabolized differently than long-chain, which leads to a beneficial boost in metabolism (3). In this study, 1 to 2 tablespoons of medium chain fats (eg. coconut oil) per day increased energy expenditure by 5% — this totals to 120 calories per day. There are many benefits of coconut oil, but aside from the health benefits, adding it to this mocha gives it a rich and creamy (NOT oily or coconut-y) taste. It just wouldn’t be as delicious without it.
Cinnamon has been suggested to boost metabolism. Dr. Oz added cinnamon to his list of “15 Superfoods,” and claims that it “lowers your blood sugar levels by stimulating glucose metabolism.” But according to this article, by Science Based Medicine, results are still inconclusive as to whether or not cinnamon leads to weight loss, so at the very least, just add it for taste.
Regardless of the health benefits, this Mocha is flippin’ delicious and the perfect remedy for this cold, winter day.
- 10-12 oz Cup of Coffee your favorite, fair trade blend
- 2 tbsp Milk (I use homemade Almond or Coconut Milk)
- 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tbsp Honey (or sweeten to taste)
- 2 tsp Cocoa Powder
- Dash Cinnamon
- Brew a cup of coffee.
- In a blender, or mini-bullet blender, combine hot cup of coffee, honey, coconut oil and cocoa power. Blend for about 15 seconds.
- Pour into a mug and sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Enjoy 🙂
